Widows has a wildly talented cast and a completely bonkers first trailer

Viola Davis might be the star of Widows, but she’s surrounded by a ridiculous amount of stars, and it looks like everyone’s brought their best.

Sometimes, you watch a trailer that doesn’t necessarily leave you hyped up in the same way as, say, a trailer for a Star Wars or Marvel movie. Sometimes, a trailer just asks you to sit and absorb how completely talented the whole cast is. That seems to be the case for Widows‘ first trailer.

It’s intense; there’s no getting around that. We really don’t expect less from Gillian Flynn or Steve McQueen. But the intensity of the directing seems to be matched by the intensity of the acting here.

Just watch this and see how many actors you can recognize from other things:

Seriously, this movie is going to kill off Liam Neeson and Jon Bernthal among others. Normally, it’d be the women that die, leaving motivation for the men to go get some revenge. (It’s called fridging, and it’s something that’s been back in pop culture lately due to Deadpool 2.) But instead, the women are the ones who are choosing to protect themselves from the criminal elements — and they’re using low expectations as their weapons.

That’s ridiculously powerful to see, even before you get to the four ladies themselves. We did not know we needed Cynthia Erivo, Michelle Rodriguez, Viola Davis and Elizabeth Debicki together on screen, forming a team of their own. But now that we’ve seen it — and seen how the trailer managed to establish that they are different people in the span of about two minutes — we absolutely do need this in our lives.

Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until Nov. 16 to actually see Widows, but we’re sure that the mere thought of how much potential this movie has will keep us going all through the summer.
