Alias Grace — Netflix

What it is: Alias Grace is also based on a Margaret Atwood novel, but unlike The Handmaid’s Tale, it takes place in the past and offers a far less bleak treatment of its female lead.  The show is part murder mystery, part historical drama, and completely enthralling.

Set in rural 19th century Ontario Canada, it tells the story of a young woman accused of killing two people while working on their farm. Sarah Gadon plays Grace, and so much of the story is told from her first person point of view. She is completely captivating, narrating the story with a delivery that will send chills down your spine. She’s accused of killing the house governess, played by Anna Paquin, and the two women are electric together on screen.

Why you’ll like it: Alias Grace provides six episodes of what Game of Thrones only gives us occasionally: quiet power. That is, there are no big explosions or fire-breathing dragons in Alias Grace, but there is incredible power in every episode. Game of Thrones does this occasionally, offering moments of low-key insanity delivered by characters so cool that butter wouldn’t melt in their mouth.

Where to find it: Season 1 only has six episodes, and they are all available on Netflix.
