When Angelina Jolie first appeared in the public eye, people dismissed her as a beautiful woman raising eyebrows on the red carpet. Today, she’s known as one of the most philanthropic celebrities of our modern age, and she’s become a symbol for what a 21st century mother (granted, a very rich and famous one) can look like.

When she adopted her first son Maddox, she endured public scrutiny. She faced skepticism about her ability to be a mother, and it was all very unfair and wildly sexist. Over the years, her family grew into a beautifully diverse group of folks both before and after she married Brad Pitt, and Jolie has been open about her inclusive, accepting style of parenting.

When she tested positive for the breast cancer gene, she also spoke out about her decision to have a double mastectomy and suddenly, women across the world were thinking more about their breast health. Her role as Goodwill Ambassador for the UN drew much needed attention and discussion to the refugee crisis, and she speaks passionately about violence toward women in war zones, raising awareness for an issue that hadn’t always gotten the most attention.

To say the least, this woman has her hands full, and we should all strive to do as much for our families and our world as she does. Plus, there is no person on the planet who can rock a red lip like Angelina Jolie.
