Rick Grimes and Michonne — The Walking Dead

Fans of the comic saw this coming a mile away, but it didn’t make it any less surprising to fans of the show. Rick and Michonne may seem inevitable in hindsight, but they are a strange pair, to say the least.

Rick’s last few girlfriends were of a certain type. I’m not saying they weren’t strong women, but it seems like Rick enjoys a woman that depends on him for his help. He likes to be the hero, and he certainly likes to be everyone’s savior. A relationship with Michonne doesn’t fit this paradigm, at all.

Michonne, as tortured and broken as Rick ever was, has her own skill set that allowed her to survive on her own for a long time before she ever met Rick and the gang. In fact, she is probably the most capable and skilled survivor of them all. She doesn’t need anyone to save her, and this is probably why it took them so long to get together.

Both Michonne and Rick have troubled pasts, and it seems like they are both so loaded down with baggage that they would never be able to make something work with someone as tormented as they are. However, times are tough in a zombie apocalypse, and you just can’t account for what the heart will do.
