Hedwig is maybe the most important thing in Harry Potter (not really)
Hedwig is an important character to Harry Potter. She’s his best friend, his pet, and the reason he survived that trip to the Burrow.
Maybe Hedwig isn’t the most important part of the Harry Potter series but she isn’t something to just laugh off either. Harry’s friend through it all, Hedwig was more than just his pet owl that he needed for school. She was his connection to Hagrid, his remembrance of the wizarding world whenever he had to return to the Dursleys, and one of his best friends.
Maybe it was because I too have a pet bird but I loved Hedwig while reading this series. When she died saying Harry, I stopped reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and didn’t pick it back up for another year and a half (true story).
She’s just constantly there for him. When his friends aren’t speaking to him or he is upset with something, she’s always there to listen (even if she’s an owl and probably doesn’t understand what he’s saying to her).
More than anything, she loves Harry. I honestly believe that Hedwig is the first thing to love Harry unconditionally that he can recognize. His parents died before he was able to understand what unconditional love really is but Hedwig is the first to truly love him without qualms.
Yes, he’s responsible for keeping her alive but she still loves him and wants to protect him. And gives her life to do so. Basically, Hedwig isn’t just a pet. She’s someone who looks out for Harry, wants him to succeed and wants to protect him no matter what.

Maybe she should have died to protect him during the trip to the Burrows but I still think that she deserved better than to fall to the ground after giving her life for Harry Potter.
