Jason Isaacs talks the bully that is Lucius Malfoy

In a world filled with hate, Lucius Malfoy would thrive. So Jason Isaacs opened up about the character and his ‘bullying’ nature.

Jason Isaacs played one of the worst people in the world. Lucius Malfoy was cold and hated his son in ways that we could not fathom. But the way that Jason describes Lucius is honestly pretty fascinating.

In an interview for Pottermore, Jason expressed the ‘bullying’ nature of Lucius Malfoy and why he believes the character would act that way. And it isn’t what you’d expect. In fact, it is much more articulate then I would have been talking about the Malfoy family.

"I think one of the reasons that the stories, all of them, the characters, resonate so much – is because they’re truthful. So I think you can see in Lucius that he’s a bully because he’s a coward. You can see that he treats his son in a loveless fashion with no compassion. Because that’s how he was raised."

Isaacs goes on to expand more into why Lucius acts the way that he does. Which is fascinating. This character would simply just be a mindless follower but he doesn’t come off that way on screen and that is solely because of Jason Isaacs and his approach to the character.

"I think that’s why the writing resonates so much and people love the fantasy and magic of it. They recognize what truths it has to say about the world we live in."
