Into the Woods: The movie versus the staged musical

Everyone who loves musicals has an interesting take on which Into the Woods is better. And now, I can finally have my time.

Into the Woods is the Sondheim classic that took our favorite fairytales and flipped them upside down. Now, you may not have seen the staged production. But many of you have probably seen the Meryl Streep movie.

Which honestly, after having seen both, I kind of prefer. First, let me explain the differences. There are only a few major ones. The first is that the wolf and Cinderella’s Prince is usually double cast. Which I wish would have happened in the movie.

Just imagine if Chris Pine sang it! It would have been wonderful. But double casting in a movie makes a little less sense. But still, it is a dream.

“Agony (Reprise)” is also cut from the movie because well, it isn’t necessary. It does have a wonderful line that goes “Ah well back to my wife” at the end of the song to help show how terrible they both are. But really, it is just more fun dramatics for the princes.

The narrator role was cut from the movie as well and that’s a bit of a bummer. But I think it is fine as it sometimes gets a bit cheesy. Other than a few minor changes here and there (and a few more song cuts) it isn’t that much different.

Now, I did like the princes better in the movie. And I’m aware that I’m biased because I love Chris Pine. But the line “I was raised to be charming not sincere” fell flat for me in the staged production because I didn’t find Cinderella’s Prince to be charming at all. So you win some, you lose some.
