Game of Thrones season 7: The finale title is not really a big surprise

“The Dragon and the Wolf” will be the last episode of Game of Thrones season 7, and who do you think it’s about? Gee, we’re just not sure.

Game of Thrones has had some big questions over the years. “Is Jon Snow going to come back to life?” (Yes.) “Where’s Lady Stoneheart?” (Not in the show.) Apparently, “What does the season 7 finale title refer to?” will not be among them.

According to a press release from HBO, the basics of which are also available on the channel’s Medium account, here’s what you need to know about the season 7 finale right now, including its length down to the second (so it’s not 80 minutes exactly, it’s just been rounded up):

"“The final episode of GAMES OF THRONES’ [sic] current season is titled “The Dragon and the Wolf,” and debuts this SUNDAY, AUG. 27 at 9:00 p.m. (ET/PT) on HBO. The total running time is 79 minutes, 43 seconds.”"

Now, who in the Seven Kingdoms has had wolf metaphors for pretty much the entire show? It couldn’t be Jon Snow, right? His northern lords dubbed him the “White Wolf” thanks to his direwolf, Ghost, and he is a Stark, after all (just not through Ned Stark). And, of course, the “dragon” is almost certainly Daenerys Targaryen. We predicted that the two of them would grow even closer in this season finale.

The title’s also reminiscent of another episode in Game of Thrones history: “The Lion and the Rose,” from season 4, which referred to the marriage of Joffrey Baratheon (really Lannister) to Margaery Tyrell. Hopefully we won’t have another disastrous death at a wedding breakfast.

Speaking of weddings, though, is it possible that there’s a secret wedding that we finally get to learn more about? Gilly has already read about Rhaegar Targaryen’s annulment and remarriage to someone we know to be Lyanna Stark, meaning that there’s likely a second layer of meaning to this title.
