Grey’s Anatomy: Eliza Minnick won’t be back in season 14

Once again, Arizona Robbins will be single and girlfriend-less in Grey’s Anatomy as reports confirm that Eliza Minnick won’t return for season 14 this fall.

So it looks like there’s going to be yet another cast change for Grey’s Anatomy season 14. In addition to recasting Owen’s sister, looks like Marika Dominczyk won’t be back next season either.

Even if you didn’t ship Arizona and Minnick, it’s really the principle that matters here. As one of TV’s most beloved and longest surviving LGBT characters, Arizona Robbins’ happiness is a big must for any Grey’s Anatomy fan.

Following her split with Callie Torres (raise your hand if you’re still bummed about that) and the ensuing custody battle, things have never really been the same at Grey Sloan for Arizona. While it’s heavily implied that she gets around, it’s not that exciting to have an LGBT character that doesn’t get to represent herself to the fullest. Like, think of it this way: if Derek and Meredith are the longest lasting couple on the show with 11 years under their belt, why is it unrealistic to have an LGBT character enjoy the same amount of relationship longevity?

It’s not like I’m a huge fan of Eliza Minnick or believe that Arizona can’t be single and happy at the same time, but as an audience member, it’s unfair that I have to watch her be lonely. Of course, their relationship didn’t really go anywhere in season 13, nor did I feel shocked when Miranda Bailey fired Minnick, but damn.

Though I have a lot of faith in Shonda Rhimes, who most likely understands the importance of the character and her well-being. Plus, so many characters come and go, any one of them could be Arizona’s next big love interest. Now that she’s really gotten her groove back, I’m sure something else will happen soon for her … just hopefully not with Leah Murphy.
