The origins of SPEW and why we love Hermione Granger

There are a lot of moments that were lost in the movie from book transition. One of those was the creation of SPEW and we’re looking at it.

Now here’s the thing about SPEW, you might not know what it is if you’ve never read the Harry Potter books. That’s on you but still, you’re missing out on a grant contribution to the character of Hermione Jane Granger.

The Society for Promotion of Elfish Welfare was created after Hermione met the house elf known as Winky. She was the elf of Barty Crouch and after what happened at the World Cup, he set her free.

With nothing to help her and a lifetime of servitude, Winky was pretty much left to her own devices. So Hermione felt the need to create SPEW to help though house elves who were stuck in their slavery.

Basically to Hermione, she saw these house elves and saw them as slaves and wanted to free them. That right there makes Hermione Granger amazing but the movies didn’t even being to address her work with SPEW.

For Winky, it wasn’t the best fate to get free from Barty Crouch. She ended up an alcoholic at Hogwarts and Dobby had to take care of her because of everything that happened. SPEW is extremely important and we’re sad that some people, who’ve never read the books, don’t get to see the best work that Hermione did.

After all, we all love Hermione and know she’s an amazing person so getting to see all the important work she did is amazing.
