Can Emmit redeem himself? Will Gloria get justice? Here are the synopsis and live stream for the penultimate episode of Fargo season 3.
Season 3 of Fargo has been a slow burn. Each episode advances the plot by increments, moving around the pieces and throwing in new developments. For the record, this isn’t a complaint. Even when nothing is technically happening, the show keeps us engaged with its charismatic cast, its mordant sense of humor, and its noir-tinged atmosphere.
Last week’s installment was one of the season’s best. After a prolonged, near-silent chase sequence through the snowy Minnesotan woods, “Who Rules the Land of Denial?” crossed into truly surreal territory, showing Nikki in what may or may not have been the afterlife. Of course, the afterlife looks like a bowling alley, complete with a wise, old man played here by Twin Peaks’ Ray Wise. The scene made season 2’s UFOs seem normal.
This week is the penultimate episode of season 3, so we’re surely in for more surprises. Below is the official synopsis for tonight’s Fargo, titled simply “Aphoria”:
"Emmit sits down with Gloria, while Nikki negotiates a deal."
Convinced that his dead brother Ray is haunting him, Emmit strode into the Eden Valley police station and declared that he wants to confess. That’s where “Who Rules the Land of Denial?” left off. Since this is Fargo, though, we doubt Emmit’s attempt to come clean will go, well, cleanly.
Meanwhile, Nikki left the bowling alley with a newfound sense of purpose. Will she follow the stranger’s advice to “take a stand against evildoers”? Will Mr. Wrench help, or did he go his own way after the bowling alley? Where are all the bridge-playing scenes we were promised?
The episode title has a couple meanings, both of which seem relevant to Fargo. First, it can be a rhetorical device that expresses doubt, often feigned. In philosophical terms, an aporia is a puzzle or dead end, often the result of contradictory theories. Together, the definitions sum up a season that’s intensely interested in the interplay between belief and certainty.
