The pinnacle of award season is Oscars night. With the 89th Academy Awards upon us, everyone holds an opinion of who’s going to win. And just like the Grammys, we really don’t know who’s going to win. Should we prepare ourselves for a huge upset? The consensus from critics is a resounding, yes.
La La Land positioned itself to sweep the Oscars early. Its overwhelming momentum is due to its wins at the Critics Choice and Golden Globes awards. Further, La La Land earned the third most nominations in Oscars history, tieing All About Eve and Titanic with 14 nominations. La La Land also has a chance to break the Oscar record (eleven) of most wins. Trying to play spoiler this season is the independent film Moonlight and Sci-Fi thriller Arrival; both with eight nominations.
Meanwhile, Manchester by the Sea hopes to be the first fdigital streaming film to win the Best Picture Award. Also vying for The Best Picture award is musical La La Land, Arrival, WWII film Hacksaw Ridge, bank heist Hell or High Water, family drama Lion, stage play turned movie Fences, and fan favorite Hidden Figures.
We might witness history being made Oscars night. If Lin-Manuel Miranda scores his first Oscar for Best Orginal Song “How Far I’ll Go” for the film Moana, he will be the first MacPEGOT. Fellow first-time Oscar nominee for Best Original Song, Justin Timberlake hopes to see Oscar gold with his pop hit “Can’t Stop the Felling!” for the movie Trolls.
