1990: Jessica Tandy

Tandy took home the 62nd Academy Award for Best Actress in 1990 for her notorious role in Driving Miss Daisy, and became the oldest actress to receive the award. She beat out Isabelle Adjani, Pauline Collins, Jessica Lange and Michelle Pfeiffer for the win.

1991: Kathy Bates

Bates won her first award for her legendarily unnerving and unhinged role in Misery as biggest fan Annie Wilkes. She beat out Anjelica Huston, Julia Roberts (in Pretty Woman), Meryl Streep and Joanne Woodward for the award.

1992: Jodie Foster

Foster took home her next win in 1992 for her famous role as FBI trainee Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs, beating out Geena Davis (in Thelma & Louise), Susan Sarandon (also for Thelma & Louise), Bette Midler and Laura Dern for the win.

1993: Emma Thompson

Thompson took home her win (and our hearts) in 1993 for her role in Howards End, winning out against Catherine Deneuve, Mary McDonnell, Michelle Pfeiffer and Susan Sarandon.

1994: Holly Hunter

Hunter took home the 1994 win for her performance in The Piano, beating out Angela Bassett (in What’s Love Got To Do With It), Stockard Channing, Emma Thomspon and Debra Winger for the award.

1995: Jessica Lange

Long before she was the queen of American Horror Story, Lange was an Academy Award winner for her role in Blue Sky. She won against Jodie Foster, Miranda Richardson, Winona Ryder and Susan Sarandon.

1996: Susan Sarandon

Sarandon took home the win at the 68th Annual Academy Awards for her perfomance in Dead Man Walking, beating out Elisabeth Shue, Sharon Stone, Meryl Streep (in The Bridges of Madison County) and Emma Thomspon (in Sense & Sensibility) for the win.

1997: Frances McDormand

McDormand took home the award in 1997 for her role in cult classic Fargo – which would later go on to inspire a hit TV series of the same name. She beat out Brenda Blethyn, Diane Keaton, Kristin Scott Thomas and Emily Watson for the win.

1998: Helen Hunt

Hunt took home the 1998 win for her role in As Good as It Gets, beating out Helena Bonham Carter, Julie Christie, Judi Dench and Kate Winslet (in the record winning Titanic) for the win.

1999: Gwyneth Paltrow

Paltrow took home the last win before the turn of the milennium for her role in Shakespeare in Love, beating out Cate Blanchett (in Elizabeth), Fernanda Montenegro, Meryl Streep and Emily Watson for the win.
