Supporting Actress
The nominees for this year’s Actress In A Supporting Role are:
- Viola Davis, Fences
- Naomie Harris, Moonlight
- Nicole Kidman, Lion
- Octavia Spencer, Hidden Figures
- Michelle Williams, Manchester by the Sea
Last year’s winner was Alicia Vikander for her role in The Danish Girl, a romantic story based on the fiction novel of the same name about two Danish artists – one, played by Eddie Redmayne, who was one of the first people to receive a sexual reassignment surgery.
This year’s nominees played mothers – bad (Naomie Harris), good (Nicole Kidman, Viola Davis and Michelle Williams), adoptive (Nicole Kidman), and real (well, all of them). They played NASA scientists that pioneered the way for other women, especially women of color, to change the world (Octavia Spencer). They played women dealing with trauma and what comes after (Michelle Williams).
They played very real women, to say the least, and each were powerful performances, to say the least. We cried with them. We laughed with them. We ached, maybe screamed, and we loved with them.
