Lead Actress

The nominees for this year’s Actress In A Leading Role category:

  • Isabelle Huppert, Elle
  • Ruth Negga, Loving
  • Natalie Portman, Jackie
  • Emma Stone, La La Land
  • Meryl Streep, Florence Foster Jenkins

Last year’s Lead Actress award went to Brie Larson for her dark and strong role in Room. This year’s nominees are no strangers to the Oscars – Natalie Portman won Best Actress for her role in Black Swan in 2011, and Emma Stone was nominated in 2015 for her supporting role in the critically acclaimed Birdman. Meryl Streep by far boasts the biggest history, with three Academy Award wins (for The Iron Lady, Sophie’s Choice and Kramer v. Kramer), and had been nominated 16 times aside from those wins – 17, including this year’s nomination.

The roles range, as always – Emma Stone was lovely and entertaining in La La Land, and Meryl Streep brought such life to the iconic Florence Foster Jenkins. Natalie Portman gave us both the raw and strong side of one of history’s greatest First Ladies with Jackie, Isabelle Huppert had hearts pounding in Elle, and Ruth Negga brought power and truth to the true, interracial love story Loving.

Whoever the winner is, there’s no disputing the facts – these ladies were powerful.
