Jane Fonda, Alan Alda, and Robin Williams

The Oscars were at it again with these bizarre teams of co-hosts. Partnering Robin Williams with Jane Fonda and Alan Alda is like putting sushi on a sandwich made with white bread and mayonnaise. Why? Why would anyone think that would go together?

Maybe they thought Fonda and Alda would balance out the energetic Williams, like drinking milk after you’ve been eating hot wings. Then again, it was 1986 and his biggest role at that point was Mork from Mork & Mindy, so his comedic genius was still somewhat muted. But he was well-known for his work as a comedian, and nothing about his stand-up routine would have suggested that Fonda and Alda would be a good match for him.

Robin Williams deserved to be on the Oscar stage alone. He could have easily carried the event himself. Letting his celebrity impersonations serve as imaginary co-hosts would have been much more entertaining. Having the aerobics queen and the guy from M*A*S*H standing by awkwardly like chaperones at a rave ruined the evening. Sadly, Robin Williams was the only one of the three Comic Relief original co-hosts who never got the chance to host the Oscars solo.
