The 10 Worst Oscars Hosts of All Time
By April Jones
Seth MacFarlane
Seth MacFarlane is best known for his raunchy, crass humor displayed in the animated television show “Family Guy.” It’s not clear what the Academy was thinking or expecting when they tapped MacFarlane to host the Oscars in 2013. The results were appalling. The New Yorker called it a “hostile, ugly, sexist night.” One of the low points of the evening was a song and dance routine centered around movies in which actresses had a nude scene. Even the song’s title, “We Saw Your Boobs,” was insulting. Mentioned in the song were award-winning performances by women like Halle Berry (Monster’s Ball), Charlize Theron (Monster), and Jodie Foster (The Accused). Leave it to McFarlane to reduce such performances to a few seconds of nudity.
Oh but that was the only cringe-worthy moment of the night. As the opening number, that was just the first. There was the remark in which he sexualized Quvenzhané Wallis, who was only nine years old at the time, suggesting that she would be too old for George Clooney in 16 years. He repeatedly mocked women over their weight and their appearance, making jokes about everyone from Jennifer Aniston to Salma Hayek. He called Django Unchained a Chris Brown and Rihanna date movie, and made a comment about an after-party taking place at Jack Nicholson’s house which may or may not have been a reference to a previous party where Roman Polanski raped a teenage girl. And of course he included an unoriginal (and unfunny) bit about Jewish people running Hollywood. Let’s hope that he won’t be invited back to host again.
