20 Celebrities Who Have Changed The Way We View Gender
Jenny Shimizu
“When I came out when I was younger, the only real label out there was “lesbian” and that was hard to hide. That was another part of myself and I never felt like it was something that I had to hide at all. I was kind of fortunate. I think there are many fractions in our community now and I think that’s good because people are educating themselves. They are coming out and realizing that there might be more than just “gay,” “bisexual,” or “straight” and I respect them for that. I don’t live in their shoes so I am not here to judge anybody about anything. My label for myself has just always been ‘queer.’“
Jenny Shimizu’s story is one of my favorites. She was approached to be a Calvin Klein model when she was working as a mechanic, and became the first Asian model to walk for Prada while also becoming the first minority model to open the show. She’s had a few film roles and has appeared on America’s Next Top Model and Make Me a Supermodel as a judge. She owes it to her androgynous look and claims that is what paved the way into what her life is now.
