Don’t be afraid to talk to a professional
There is no shame in admitting that things are hard and that you need help – even if it’s anxiety exacerbated by the current political climate. Getting anxious from the news these days is a very real and valid reaction, and sometimes, it’s too much to handle on your own. Reach out to your doctor and ask for therapist recommendations. Research therapists in the area, do your homework, and ask if they’re accepting new patients. Whether it becomes a regular, long-standing appointment or just a few visits, chatting with a professional may just help.
Not sure where to start? Try talking with friends and family and see if they have any recommendations or support to offer – even just one person to hold you accountable and support you through your search may make all the difference. If you’re not ready or comfortable discussing with anyone in your life, ask for help online – there are online therapists, or communities to support you through your own journey. (If you search the #TalkingAboutIt tag on Twitter, you’ll find a community of people talking openly about their journeys and supporting each other in the best ways, all while breaking down the stigmas of mental health.)
Regardless of how you go about it finding help, there’s no shame to be felt for doing so. It’s okay to not be okay – and you’re never as alone as you think.
