The original Schuyler Sisters from Hamilton, Phillipa Soo, Renée Elise Goldsberry, and Jasmine Cephas Jones, sang the heck of America The Beautiful
We knew it was going to be good, this preshow of the 51st Super Bowl. After all, the producers landed one of the best damn trios out there to sing during it. No, not Destiny’s Child, though that would probably cause close to the same amount of excitement.
No, instead they got the three mavens of Broadway, the original Schuyler Sisters from Hamilton: An American Musical, Phillipa Soo, Renée Elise Goldsberry, and Jasmine Cephas Jones, to sing America the Beautiful.
This is not the first time the Schuyler Sisters have performed during the National Anthem, mind you. The current line up, Mandy Gonzalez, Lexi Lawson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones sang the actual anthem back in October during the regular season. But this is the first time we’ve had the original line up sing since Soo and Goldsberry left the show. And certainly at the biggest event so far.
Fantastic.
Sadly, Luke Bryan, who was asked to follow up with the actual National Anthem, had a lot to live up to, and the reviews on Twitter were mediocre at best. Judge for yourself if you think it was any good or not.
I don’t think he did a bad job, but the NFL might have done everyone a favor by flipping the song choices and having the ladies of Hamilton do the actual anthem, and the poor country boy stick to America The Beautiful.
