The Ghost in the Shell Remake Has a New, Probably Expensive TV Spot

Although not every big movie has paid for a chance to advertise during one of the biggest live events of the year, it appears that Ghost in the Shell will.

Though it hasn’t made quite as much noise as other sci-fi films coming out this year — thanks to a little picture called Star Wars: The Last Jedi at the very least — Ghost in the Shell appears to want to make anime cool again by translating it into live-action and casting Scarlett Johansson as Major Motoko Kusanagi, hereafter referred to as the Major.

It also appears that Paramount wants to make anime cool again by the title of its new teaser for the film. (We tip our hats to Vulture.)

Check it out below, and pay attention to the fact that it’s been dubbed the “Big Game Spot”. (Warning: at first glance, it appears that the Major is nude. She is a cyborg, and if you look closely you can see she basically has the anatomy of a doll. This has apparently been cleared to air during the, ahem, big game. Be careful where you watch it, though.)

If nothing else, this new teaser could very well pique viewers’ interest. There’s almost no dialogue, instead focusing on the visuals of Ghost in the Shell‘s take on Tokyo. This isn’t a bad choice, honestly, because Paramount clearly committed to trying and making this look as visually interesting as the original anime did.

It also doesn’t shy away from showing that the Major is a cyborg. In fact, the only dialogue says, “They didn’t save your life. They stole it”, and that’s the caption on the teaser on YouTube, only changing “your” to “her”. It appears that the movie may also explore how the Major became what she is today. (Looking at you, Rogue One, since you cut out the imperial Jyn Erso.)
