Chandler and Monica – Friends
The Setup
Perhaps the most iconic couple in television history, Chandler and Monica’s proposal was a long time coming. After all, the two first started secretly dating at the end of season 4, the proposal happens at the end of season 6, and Friends is ten seasons long. Basically, fans had to wait almost seven years for these two kids to work it out. But they did!
At first, Monica knew Chandler as her brother Ross’s friend, and when they got older they became great friends. But after years and years (and years) of platonic hangouts, eating each other’s food, and helping each other with their romantic relationships, they realized they were right for each other all along.
The few episodes that lead up to their proposal, however, tested their relationship. Chandler was preparing to propose to Monica, but he wanted it to be perfect and a surprise. Meanwhile, Monica was visited by an ex-boyfriend, Richard. They had broken up years before because Monica wanted children and he didn’t. But Richard showed up at Monica’s place of work one day telling her that he still loves her – and he’s changed his mind about the kid thing. Obviously Monica shuts him down, explaining that she’s not interested in leaving Chandler. But before she can even bring it up, Chandler makes a comment about not really believing in marriage, hoping to fake her out and surprise her with his proposal.
The Moment
Chandler’s hesitancy to commit had been a consistent sticking point in their relationship, so his comments make Monica question whether he’s serious. And if he’s not, she wonders if she should be with Richard instead. But once enlightened by his friends, Chandler rushes to propose to Monica – only to find her waiting in their apartment, full of candles, ready to propose herself. Monica begins to ask him, but becomes too emotional to get the words out, so Chandler takes over. “I thought that it mattered what I said, or where I said it. Then I realized the only thing that matters is that you make me happier than I ever thought I could be. And if you’ll let me, I will spend the rest of my life trying to make you feel the same way.”
TL;DR, the friend zone isn’t real and the Bings are bomb.
