Things To Do In D.C. When You’re Here For The Women’s March
(Screencap via Busboys and Poets Bookstore)
Indy Bookstores
D.C. is a town full of nerds who love to read. We also like our coffee. Bring all that together and we get a number of vibrant, independent bookstores that serve coffee, brunch, lunch, dinner, breakfast and dessert. And most importantly, adult beverages. Drunken book shopping is a thing, my friend.
They also host all manner of events for lovers of art and the written (and spoken) word.
Politics and Prose
Politics & Prose Bookstore and Coffeehouse is the heavy hitting indy bookstore with the lighter menus, consisting mostly of breakfast, sandwiches and desserts. And of course coffee, beer and wine. This weekend’s events include:
- Jonathan Chait Audacity: How Barack Obama Defied His Critics and Transformed America
- Teach-in on Women’s Rights with Fatima Goss Graves, Jennifer Klein and Rebecca Traister
- Jessica Valenti– Sex Object: A Memoir
- Laura Fargas and Robert J. Williams authors of The Green of Ordinary Time and Strivers and Other Stories
Michael Kazin – War Against War: The American Fight for Peace, 1914-1918.
Busboys and Poets
Busboys and Poets is a bookseller featuring art exhibits, and events like poetry and open mic nights. Their cafe serves vegan fare in addition to their many items for omnivores.
Kramerbooks and Afterwards Cafe
Kramerbooks and Afterwards Cafe serves heartier food and their own spin on area restaurant standards, like steaks, pastas, and chicken pot pie. In high school, I spent many an hour here, finding Waldo and eating wild mushroom lasagne.
Geneive Abdo will address her book The New Sectarianism, about the Shi’a-Sunni conflict, on Wednesday, January 18th at 6:30 pm at Kramerbooks.
