Dax Shepard and Michael Pena visited Jimmy Kimmel last night to unveil the first full-length trailer for the reboot of CHiPs!
If the thought of a CHiPs reboot worries you a little bit, don’t let it. Because Dax Shepard probably understands your concerns and shares them himself. But as the writer, director and producer of this movie, it looks like he’s found the comedic buddy cop sweet spot.
Teaming up with Michael Pena (the criminally underrated actor from Ant-Man), Shepard pulls off another Hit and Run feat. Basically, he called up all his famous friends, dug up all his best and most charming jokes, and put them together for the love project that is CHiPs.
Watch the trailer below:
Personally, I love Dax Shepard. And I love him even more when he’s anywhere in the proximity of his lovely wife, Kristen Bell. Based on the television series of the same name, CHiPs follows two Los Angeles highway patrol officers, Frank Poncherello and Jon Baker. Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox originated the roles, respectively. Due for release this March, it looks like Shepard for the perfect recipe to revive the series, despite the lack of Pine men or Bears seen in this trailer.
The movie seems to have a similar tone to Baywatch, except that this fits perfectly in Shepard’s wheelhouse. He’s a cars guy (he named his kids Lincoln and Delta), which translates to great motorcycle scenes. Plus, it doesn’t look like this movie’s trying too hard for attention, and will likely be an excellent movie for a matinee. Though, Bad Moms (which starred Kristen Bell) had a similar start, and ended up making a ton of money and earning a sequel.

The jokes play easily enough, but my reservation is that it’s releasing at really awkward time. The box office gets really competitive in March, with Fast 8 hitting theaters in mid-April.
CHiPs opens on March 24, 2017.
