What If Riverdale Had Been A Time Travel Show? It Almost Happened

Apparently, someone once suggested Riverdale should be a time travel show starring Louis C.K., and that would’ve been…interesting.

Over the weekend during a panel at the Winter Television Critics Association press tour, we learned something new about the upcoming CW show Riverdale, based on Archie Comics. Robert Aguirre-Sacasa, the Chief Creative Officer of Archie Comics and Executive Producer on Riverdale recounted a meeting in which an executive thought the “coming of age” story he intended to tell needed something more. And what did it need? Time travel, obviously.

Yeah, you read that right. Aguirre-Sacasa said he was “gobsmacked”. Of course, Riverdale ended up taking a different approach to the comics. In its upcoming iteration, Riverdale is actually a teen noir drama — think Veronica Mars meets Twin Peaks. Yes, it’s that good. And imagining the show as anything but that is hard to do. But a time travel show? Not only do we currently have arguably too many time travel shows on the air, but throwing in the idea of Archie and friends traveling around using “a portal to another dimension” seems absurd.

But wait, there’s more. The executive also suggested an older Archie. Which, honestly when has that ever been suggested? There was even a suggestion of Louis C.K. playing the older version of Archie, who also time travels. Yes, please keep up with these ideas. Luckily, the Riverdale we ended up with is far from this idea. Archie is in high school and trying to figure out the mysteries of Riverdale while being a “normal” teenager.
