Sherlock Season 4 continues this week with “The Lying Detective”. Here’s the news you need for setting your DVRs or just getting ready to watch.

To be honest, we don’t really know what to expect from Sherlock’s second episode. And the official episode synopsis offers absolutely zero help in that department. Sure, there are still plenty of plot threads left dangling from the season premiere. Most notably, John and Sherlock must deal with the impact of Mary’s death on their friendship. And there’s also that nagging Moriarty mystery hanging over everyone’s heads. Plus, we don’t exactly know whether John was having an affair or not either. That woman on the bus definitely looked shady.
Additionally, “The Lying Detective” promises the introduction of Toby Jones as villain Culverton Smith. Of course have no idea who he is or what he wants because this is Sherlock and they hate telling us things. He’s definitely a bad dude, if the trailer is anything to go by. (No nice person laughs in that exaggerated, full-on Dr. Evil way, that’s for sure.) But what does he really want? And why does Sherlock hate him so much? Your guess is probably as good as ours.
It seems like a safe assumption that there’s going to be a twist of some sort involved. Whether it has to do with Smith’s connection to Sherlock or Moriarty’s final plan or some random other random surprise is as yet unknown. But knowing creator Steven Moffat – who wrote this episode – literally anything is possible. (And the crazier your theory is, the more likely it’s probably true.)
