A Young Doctor’s Notebook
A Young Doctor’s Notebook And Other Stories gives the space time continuum a run for its money as it tells its story, in real time, from two different perspectives of the same man. I’m making it sound far more confusing than it really is, trust me. You’ll catch on super quick.
Both Daniel Radcliffe and Jon Hamm play Dr. Vladmir “Nika” Bomgard. Radcliffe as his younger self and Hamm as the older version. The doctors, at both ages, interact with each other sometimes, and other times speak in asides to the audience. The dark comedy is semi-autobiographical, based on the short story collection of the same name by Russian physician Mikhail Bulgakov, and takes place during two Russian wars. It is one of the only television adaptations of serious literature, but don’t let get in the way of your enjoyment.
All this sounds terribly weird and dry, but trust me, it’s not. It’s a dark comedy full of winking British humor and jokes, and is probably your only opportunity to see Don Draper and Harry Potter occupy the same space, much less the same bath tub. Its wit can be, at times, biting and is infused with the grotesque and satirical – my favorite kind of show.
Both seasons one and two of A Young Doctor’s Notebook are available on Netflix.
