5. Daniel and Sam Getting Through the Holiday

Sometimes we lose someone before the holidays and everyone is expected to just remain happy for the holiday season. It hurts, and you have to learn to cope. Daniel (Liam Neeson) and Sam (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) show us that. Sam’s mother (and Daniel’s wife) dies in the beginning of the movie.

They don’t really know how to cope with it and the majority of the movie is just the two of them trying to figure out their relationship. Daniel is Sam’s stepdad, and they aren’t sure how to function around one another. So they just use the season to figure it out and move past their loss.

It is all something we can really learn from. Loss is hard, but we have to move on. However, the holidays can be a particularly hard time. The way that Daniel and Sam grow and move on together is really inspirational.

The learn how to help each other and use one another to get through. It’s really something special to see. They love one another, and it really helps them cope with everything around them. Even Sam’s messy love life and trying to get the American girl at school to fall in love with him.
