5. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

The highest comedy on this list, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, is also a Netflix Original. Ellie Kemper stars as the titular Kimmy Schmidt, a young woman who spent 15 years locked in an underground bunker and believing that she’d survived the end of humanity. When she emerges and appears on The Today Show, she comes to the conclusion that she wants to live in New York City.

With Tina Fey as one of the creators, you know there’s going to be a lot of comedy involved, and Fey naturally also makes appearances in front of the camera. However, Kemper, Tituss Burgess, Jane Krakowski, and the rest of the cast have the humor angle pretty well covered. However, even Krakowski has admitted she needs to go through scripts a couple times just to catch all of the jokes. (Be warned: the interview contains spoilers for Season 2.) While the show’s named after Kimmy, though, each character gets moments to shine and develop more fully.

A TV-14 rating means that this is the safer of the two Netflix comedies on this list, though it does require a slightly larger commitment. In other words, the show actually has two seasons of 13 episodes each. Episodes in the first season tend to run for about 24 minutes, but the second season’s episodes are a bit longer, generally clocking in around the 30-minute mark.
