20th Century Women (December 25th)

Three very different women band together to serve as role models in 1979 Santa Barbara.

20th Century Women is a film I’ve heard so much about, mainly for Annette Bening’s luminous performance. Director Mike Mills came into prominence with 2010’s Beginners, a film that nabbed Christopher Plummer his long-awaited Oscar. Since then fans have been waiting with bated breath for his follow-up. 20th Century Women, like Beginners, is another in the dramedy category, that looks to blend laughs with serious pathos. Outside of the fantastic Bening, who many say might be seeing another Oscar nomination (and possible win), a la Plummer, you also have indie darling Greta Gerwig and “it girl” Elle Fanning (who’s have quite the December between this and Live By Night).

The film currently holds a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and reviews around the board are highlighting the script and performances. With so much discussion about the roles of women in film, it’s always nice to see an ensemble cast where females outnumber men. Between that and the period setting – have you realized I enjoy period dramas of a certain era – seeing 20th Century Women is how I plan to spend my Christmas Day, barring I can squeeze it into an already packed movie schedule.
