22. William ‘Penny’ Adiyodi- The Magicians

The Magicians, a fantasy series of Syfy, premieres its second season on January 25, 2017. The story centers around Quentin Coldwater who enrolls at Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy to become a trained magician. However, he discovers that a magical world from books he would read as a child is actually real and is now posing a threat to humanity.

William ‘Penny’ Adiyodi (Arjun Gupta) is of Indian decent and is Quentin’s roommate. And to put it simply, he’s an asshole. A lifetime of emotional neglect led him to be the cold-hearted and cheeky person he is today. He had to leave home at a young age and just hasn’t been raised the way most other have in the show. Gupta describes himself as an “American gypsy” and a “lone wolf” when speaking of his character.

His story arc through season 1 transforms him to be the standoffish character at the beginning, to a character you deeply feel for by the end. Penny is complex, subtle, but also strong, established, and confident in his own self.
