Allied (November 23rd)
Synopsis: An intelligence officer and a French Resistance fighter find their relationship tested when the U.S. government fears one is a spy.
Director Robert Zemeckis’ Allied is infamous before even being screened for critics. If you listen to the gossip mags this is the film where Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard got together, destroying Brangelina and all we hold sacred about life, the universe and everything. God forbid if the movie isn’t good. Last year Zemeckis gave us the recreation of Philippe Petit’s infamous walk between the World Trade Center in The Walk, which did respectable business despite being more of a gimmick film.
But it’s been awhile since a Zemeckis film has trounced the box office, and it’s doubtful Allied will break the curse. The film’s trailers give off a Mr. and Mrs. Smith vibe – yeah, this is gonna be awkward – with a dose of The Good Shepherd; one of those movies did a lot better than the other. The marketing push for this is going to be very interesting, particularly the press interviews, because the stench surrounding this in light of popular culture is high. Keeping press on focus about the film is going to be tough. Just look at how hard it is for me to keep my eyes on the film! With that being said, Allied is hoping for awards consideration: that WWII setting, forbidden love, the fantastic way Marion Cottilard’s hair waves. If it’s not a big box-office bonanza there’s always hope for awards love.
