We Have a Young Lando Calrissian for the Han Solo Star Wars Movie

Yup, it’s official: Lando Calrissian will appear in the Han Solo standalone movie, and yes, Donald Glover will play him, as announced today by Lucasfilm.

Lucasfilm, you old space pirates! You dropped this news on a Friday when we were all flustered about the massive DDoS attacks on Twitter, Spotify, and more! However, we’ve caught this. As reported on the official Star Wars site, Donald Glover will play Lando Calrissian in the Han Solo spinoff movie.

You may have heard the rumblings and rumors that he would take the part on. Today, though, represents the first official confirmation that it’s happening.

The news also confirms that we will see Lando and Han in their younger years. Unfortunately, we still don’t have a concrete timeline on when this movie takes place. Instead, all it says is that the events of this film take place “years before…The Empire Strikes Back“, when Lando first appeared in the franchise.

In fact, the film still doesn’t actually have a title, either! We still have to call it the Han Solo standalone. Considering that we still don’t know what Episode VIII‘s subtitle will be, though, that can’t come as much of a surprise.

We also know who will play everyone’s favorite scruffy-looking nerf herder. Lucasfilm previously announced the casting of Alden Ehrenreich as a younger Han Solo.

As we still don’t know anything about plot details for this movie, we can’t speculate much on what we’ll see. However, it seems very likely that the legendary sabacc game that saw Han win the Millennium Falcon from Lando will at least be mentioned, if not shown.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller of The LEGO Movie and the 21 Jump Street duology will direct. In the announcement from Lucasfilm, they apologized to Glover for “ruining Comic-Con for him forever”.

Right now, you can see Glover on Atlanta on FX, and he also has a part in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming.

The Han Solo movie, which hopefully won’t be actually called that, will hit theaters sometime in 2018.
