With the first movie in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them series only a few weeks away from its premiere, the sequel gets its own release date.
Newt Scamander is well on his way to New York. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them hits theaters worldwide in just a few short weeks, on November 18th. Harry Potter fans and novices alike have been eagerly awaiting this new magical adventure since 2015. It all started when J.K. Rowling tweeted what turned out to be an anagram. “Cry, foe! Run amok! Fa awry! My want won’t tolerate this nonsense.” Later that day, Rowling unscrambled the riddle: “Newt Scamander only meant to stay in New York for a few hours.”
Rowling’s Dumbledore-esque gibberish proved to be a memorable turning point in the Potterverse. While it doesn’t seem like Newt’s story will overlap with Harry’s, it does affect what we know of wizarding world history. Not to mention, Newt and his fantastic beasts are in for a bigger adventure than what was initially thought. What was meant to be a trilogy has since been expanded to a five-part series.GIF image via Warner Brothers
Newt Scamander only meant to stay onscreen for three movies… But where there’s a plan in the Potterverse, there’s someone there to put a flaw in it. Such is the case for Newt. While no further plot details have dropped about the next four films, we do have a release date for part two.
Mark your calendars for November 16, 2018, because Newt Scamander is coming to… Well, we’re not sure yet. If he only meant to pop in and out of New York, chances are he won’t be staying there beyond one movie. Especially considering all the chaos that ensues, as we’ve seen from the trailers. This chaos includes, of course, the escape of many a magical creature. But it also concerns the Dark wizard Grindelwald, who impacts the Potter world on the whole.
While big-picture elements like Grindelwald are at least mentioned in the first installment, there’s no telling what part he’ll play later. Since Fantastic Beasts has upgraded to a five-film franchise, there has to be more to it than constantly escaping beasts. With nothing but a release date to tide us over, fans have a lot to mull over in the next two years.
But let’s not get too ahead of ourselves. After all, we have to get through the first Fantastic Beasts before we start speculating on the second. Once we’re privy to all the intel the first movie can offer us, our detective caps will certainly fit better. So hold fast to your wands and keep a lookout for clues. As Mad-Eye Moody would say, constant vigilance.
