Kraznys mo Nakloz
Astapor slave-trader Master Kraznys might have had a chance at survival had it not been for… well, his entire personality. Not knowing that Daenerys is fluent in Valyrian, Kraznys continually demeans and sexualizes her. His translator, Missandei, sugarcoats her master’s words because she’s a more savvy businesswoman than he.
Additionally, Kraznys fancies himself more clever than Daenerys. In his eyes, she’s inexperienced and easily manipulated. He tries to take her for a ride, only giving up the haggle when she offers up a dragon in exchange for the Unsullied forces. I’m not quite sure why Kraznys thought he’d win out against a woman with three dragons. But perhaps it’s just another of Game of Thrones’ examinations of the folly of man.
Master Kraznys’ death is something of a catalyst in Daenerys’ development. She bids him barbecued, and then commands her newly acquired Unsullied to kill anyone else carrying a whip. It’s not the first time Daenerys orchestrates an execution, but it is the first time that it’s on such a large scale. Her power really begins to burgeon here. She’s not at anyone’s mercy. Rather, the tables have turned and she holds all the cards. The fall of Astapor is her debutante ball. As Diana Ross sings, she’s coming out, she wants the world to know, she’s got to let it show.
