6. The Fosters- Stef Adams Foster
Back to The Fosters– the most progressive show on television. Stef Foster (Teri Polo) is a police office for the San Diego Police Department, and despite being a lesbian, has gotten shot and lived to tell the tale. She’s raised a brood of teenagers with her beloved wife, Lena (Sherri Saum). They are, as I like to call them, #momgoals. Their dynamic is spicy, loving, nurturing, and protective. They’re everything you could want on a series.
This show touches on so many important issues right now. It’s covered countless controversial issues, and of everything it has touched upon, a lesbian couple raising their foster kids is the least radical of them. That’s what makes this show so important.
Stef was previously married and had a son in that marriage. Although she knew she had feelings for women at a younger age, her dad was unaccepting of it. He sent her to church counseling in college, and that has forever tainted their relationship. Many of the story lines depict Stef and her father, and how they navigate mending their once fractured relationship. It’s nothing easy, but it’s a story worth telling, and a story that is necessary for a current audience.
