9. Carmilla- Carmilla Karnstein
Okay, let’s just jump right into Carmilla Karnstein herself. Natasha Negovanlis is the only person who could pull off this layered character. She is fierce, and dangerous, and edgy. She is strong willed, and thrilling, and protective. And, she’s into girls. So that’s a plus.
Negovanlis holds this character tightly to her heart. In a recent interview with CBCradio, she notes, “I think this fandom was just so desperate for representation. I think that’s what makes the show so important to them, and what makes it important to me, as well.” Carmilla’s relationship with Laura (Elise Bauman) is the true success behind this web series and both actors know that. The confidence behind the two girls and the love between them is where the magic lies.
While a handful of shows killed off their lesbian leads this year, Carmilla has, so far, avoided that trope. Fans on social media have even called this show “life-saving,” due to its positive representation of something so under represented. In an interview with TalkNerdyWithUs, Negovanlis notes that she’s “proud to work on a series that provides the voice for the LGBTQ+ community and especially LGBTQ+ youth.”
The show is in it’s season 3 and it’s final episodes drop on October 13th.
