11. The Fosters- Jude Adams Foster

The Fosters is absolutely paving the way towards positive queer representation in media. Whether it’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender characters- they’ve got ‘em. The show follows the family of a lesbian couple, Lena (Sherri Saum) and Stef Adams-Foster (Teri Polo), and you’ll see them later on in this list, because they’re mom goals.

They have one biological son, Brandon (David Lambert), from Stef’s previous marriage, and four kids they’ve adopted- Jesus (Noah Centineo), Mariana (Cierra Ramirez), Callie (Maia Mitchell), and Jude (Hayden Byerly). This show is not only my favorite show because of its mainstream treatment of controversial topics, it’s my favorite because it just tells the story of a beautifully genuine family.

One of those topics being Jude’s sexuality. This kid is barely a teenager when he realizes he’s gay and of course, he struggles with it. He develops feelings for his friend at school, who also realizes he’s gay. The two begin a journey of self-realization and self-acceptance.

Jude’s plot line is something rarely seen on television, and is even questioned a lot off the screen. How young can you be to understand and accept your sexuality? Well, The Fosters is diving into that question and attempting to answer it.
