21. Shannara Chronicles- Eretria
This MTV fantasy drama is in adaptation of the Shannara series by Terry Brooks, and based primarily off The Elfstones of Shannara . Filmed in the beautiful New Zealand, the cinematography and sets, alone, are worth watching this show for. And an added bonus of bisexuality.
Set in the fictional Four Lands, demons are coming back after being banished from this world to a place called the Forbidding. This place is locked by an ancient tree, the Ellcrys. The series follows Eretria (Ivana Baquero), Amberle (Poppy Drayton), and Wil (Austin Butler) as their journey begins to save the tree from dying.
Here’s where it gets interesting. This show had all the ingredients for an overly used, monotonously boring hetero love triangle. But it didn’t. Instead, the dynamics were fluid and we quickly learned that Eretria and Amberle may have feelings for each other. A steamy bath scene between the two proved that. Neither girls fell victim to the “slutty bisexual” trope, though- looking to get it wheveer they can find it. Instead, the scene teases their sexuality and confirms something we’d all expected.
The writers have conformed Eretria’s bisexuality, and we’re curious if it’ll be acted upon in season two.
