8. Almost Famous

Almost Famous isn’t a musical, but it has music built into its DNA. The semi-biographical movie written and directed by Cameron Crowe is about a teenage boy, William Miller (Patrick Fugit), who goes on tour with the band Stillwater in hopes of publishing his first big story as a rock journalist. Along the way he learns the inner workings of the band, the music industry, and what it means to meet your heroes.

Almost Famous has a killer soundtrack, so good it won the Grammy in 2001. Why change any of the songs? Just make a musical where the characters sing the songs straight from the soundtrack. including the fictional Stillwater ones, and use the music to tell this story from this very specific place in musical history.

The best part of Almost Famous is how it makes you feel that you are a part of this fake band while also reminding you of every band you’ve ever loved. You are seeing their shows and living their lives and it is all one big dream. Broadway is the perfect vehicle for this film because it has that intimacy one moment for those quiet scenes between Lester Bangs (Philip Seymour Hoffman RIP) and Will talking about being uncool and also the stage to put on a rock concert with a performance of “Fever Dog.”
