10. The Breakfast Club

Any John Hughes movie could be made into a musical really. His use of music in his films was so important and memorable that entire plays could be made around them. Perhaps none would be better to adapt for the stage than his 1985 hit The Breakfast Club. A story about what it means to be a teenager told for a new generation and presented in a new way combined with the great characters, iconic costumes, and current 80’s nostalgia and you have the makings of a Broadway smash on hand.

The music of a Breakfast Club musical could be 80’s inspired or more modern. It could even combine multiple musical eras to impact everyone watching. The story is perfect because of its universal themes of finding who you are and growing up and discovering your place in life and in high school. It would be one of those plays you would see for the name and your love for the movie, but leave surprised at how emotional it left you.

A musical about five kids getting detention on a Sunday is also perfect setting for a play. A few desks is all you really need to set the stage, maybe a table or statue for jumping on or dancing with. And of course the musical would have to end with “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” by Simple Minds as the kids contemplate what will happen come Monday morning.
