OTTAWA, ON – SEPT 10: Corey Perry

2. The Games are Easy to Watch

One of the number one frustrations of the 2016 Rio Olympics was actually watching the competitions. NBC saved many events to air in primetime at 8 pm (which they have every right to do), but by that time the winners were already known and highlights widely circulated. Waiting to watch the women’s gymnastics final until 11 pm when it is known the United States won suddenly became a lot less fun and took away the suspense. However, the World Cup of Hockey is actually fairly easy to watch in comparison. For one, all the games are taking place in Toronto which is on Eastern Time, making the games come on at a normal time like 7 pm EST/4 pm PST.

Also, in a big move, ESPN outbid normal NHL provider NBC for rights to air the games. NBC has been great for hockey for the most part unless you live on the west coast and root for an east coast team like me. ESPN is synonymous to sports for most people. It makes hockey easily accessible for the masses who may be interested in checking out some games and not scrolling through 1,000 channels to find NBC Sports. There’s a good chance that because of this channel change you are more likely to be able to catch a game at any sports bar provided it’s not a Sunday. That’s a pretty nice change. It also means you can watch the games online via WatchESPN if you log in with your cable provider.
