Double X Gabfest
The Double X Gabfest is a Slate podcast featuring three ridiculously smart women – Hanna Rosin (also one of the hosts of Invisibilia), June Thomas, and Noreen Malone. It’s a bi-weekly podcast in which the hosts choose three topics relating to women’s issues that occurred during the past two weeks and then hash them out, round-table style.
One of the greatest things about this podcast is that they are open to discussing anything, regardless of how seemingly academic or trivial it may be. Past topics include Kesha, decriminalizing sex work, the movie Carol, the musical Fun Home, a condescending New York Times piece about “mom hair”, and almost every aspect of the Hillary Clinton campaign. Nothing is too big or too small to be broken down, explained, and analyzed. And, like other Slate podcasts, each host gives a recommendation (or two, or three…) at the end, so you get the benefit of a heads-up for feminist books, film, TV, and other cultural works you might be interested in.
I love this podcast because it gives me a succinct rundown of different points of view on each topic. I appreciate how Rosin, Thomas, and Malone are never afraid to disagree or voice takes that may not be popular. Even if you don’t always agree with the conclusions they come to, you’ll love hearing the thoughts that led to them. And hearing smart ladies talk about important things can only make your own personal feminism more nuanced and informed. Who doesn’t want that?
Where To Start: This podcast is super topical, so it’s best to start with the most recent episode, which right now would be “The Women and Headphones Edition.”
