Sooo Many White Guys
Comedian Phoebe Robinson of 2 Dope Queens makes her second appearance on this list with her side hustle, Sooo Many White Guys. The podcast is dedicated to counteracting the whiteness and maleness of popular culture. It features Robinson interviewing actors, writers, comedians, musicians – people at the top of their respective professions – so long as they are not a white guy.
Robinson seeks to feature the talent of non-white, non-male artists and to discuss issues of racism, sexism, and other types of oppression, but in a more direct way than 2 Dope Queens does. That’s not to say that Sooo Many White Guys isn’t funny, though, because it totally is. Robinson’s interactions with producer Joanna Solotaroff, in particular, are exceptionally hysterical – and honestly, I’d listen to Solotaroff’s own podcast in a heartbeat.
But the serious conversations that deal directly with social issues, such as the complexity of interracial relationships (with Constance Wu), or how to break the cycle of white male Hollywood (with Gina Rodriguez), show another side to this Dope Queen, and we love it. Robinson is smart, hilarious, endlessly lovable, and always seems like she is having the most fun. The “laugh-while-you-learn” is my favorite style of podcast, and Sooo Many White Guys nails it.
Where To Start: All of it, but “Phoebe and Janet Mock Make Lemonade” features a great discussion about the commodification of feminism
