Invisibilia
If you’re a Radiolab junkie, Invisibilia is a must. Also produced by NPR, Invisibilia is a podcast about “the invisible forces that control human behavior – ideas, beliefs, assumptions, and emotions.” Co-hosts Lulu Miller, Alix Spiegel, and Hanna Rosin investigate and report stories to discover more about the nature of subjects like fear, categories, and the concept of “normal.”
There’s this problem in the writing and reporting fields that seems to affect a lot of women. Publications and production companies search frequently for women to write memoir, but they often turn down women writers who want to write investigative journalism or scientific non-fiction. There’s an unconscious bias towards men in these journalistic genres of writing, because of the stereotype of women being emotional rather than rational.
But Invisibilia is made up of three women who are all about the investigation. Each episode, they interview scientists, experts, and just regular people who have stories to tell. Spiegel, Miller, and Rosin ask big questions, and they do so with such a thoughtful and passionate touch that it’s impossible not to love not just the podcast, but them.
Where To Start: “The New Norm” begins season 2, introduces Hanna Rosin as a host, and examines how people learn to accept a new status quo.
