9. Jaime Lannister: “You’ll Be In My Heart”
"Don’t listen to them ‘Cause what do they know? (What do they know?) We need each other To have, to hold They’ll see in time I know —Tarzan"
Unfortunately for Jaime, his romance with Cersei doesn’t look like it will meet the happy end this song suggests. Of course, now that all their children are dead and Cersei has taken the Iron Throne, it seems that Jaime’s well-shot of her now. But up until the Season 6 finale, he was clinging to their relationship with something like obsession.
During the siege at Riverrun, Jaime tells Edmure Tully, “I love Cersei. You can laugh at that if you want, you can sneer. It doesn’t matter. […] You don’t matter to me, Lord Edmure. Your son doesn’t matter to me. The people in the castle don’t matter to me. Only Cersei. And if I have to slaughter every Tully who ever lived to get back to her, that’s what I’ll do.”
It has gotten to a point for Cersei and Jaime both that they don’t care who knows about them. The rumors have circulated for so long that there’s nothing new anyone can say to hurt them. They are what they are, and throughout the years Jaime especially has been entrenched in his perceived need for Cersei. Everything he’s done has been to be by her side or regain her favor. She has been his top priority from the start, and in this way she is always with him.
I suspect that Jaime will never truly be rid of her, no matter what becomes of them as individuals and as a unit. It’s not a particularly healthy reading of “You’ll Be In My Heart,” but it still stands.
