11. Varys: “Friends On the Other Side”

"Don’t you disrespect me, little man Don’t you derogate or deride You’re in my world now, not your world And I got friends on the other side —The Princess and the Frog"

Varys has a sour relationship with magic, but this song nevertheless cuts to the core of his character. He may not look like an enemy lurking in the shadows, but everyone knows that Varys isn’t to be trifled with. He knows everyone without letting himself be known. People say that Littlefinger is impossible to read but, then, everyone also knows that they shouldn’t trust Littlefinger at all. Meanwhile, Varys is another story. Not only is he approachable, but he’s a champion of the innocents. He doesn’t set out to hurt the good guy, and in fact he often tries to prevent that. This is especially notable in Season 3, when he works to ensure Sansa’s safety and happiness with a union to Loras Tyrell. He takes a keen interest in her well-being, more so than Littlefinger ever has.

Still, Varys is a dangerous man to tangle with. He has friends across the world, spies and minions and a special sort of power. He’s not a man to cross. And when you play the game of thrones, you leave your world and enter his. He’s been a player from the beginning, and he knows all the pieces and all the moves on the board.

Later in the song, Dr. Facilier says, “I can read your future, I can change it ‘round some too.” While Varys doesn’t demonstrate any fortune-telling skills, he uses what he does know to his utmost advantage. Not only that, but he takes others along for the ride, thereby changing their futures. Varys almost single-handedly ensures that Daenerys will have allies upon her arrival in Westeros. He encourages Tyrion to join the rebellion, and brings Dorne and Highgarden into the fold as well.

It seems that Varys doesn’t just have friends on the other side, but every side.
