On The X-Files’ 23rd anniversary, we look back at the 23 greatest moments we shared with Mulder and Scully.

Exactly 23 years ago today, September 10, 1993, Dana Scully first waltzed into Fox Mulder’s pencil-ceiling’ed basement office. She, and by proxy, we, were introduced to a series of mostly unsolved and largely inexplicable paranormal cases known as “The X-Files.” And from then on, the world would never be the same.

Sunflower seeds would no longer be a messy snack, but a charming habit. “It’s me” would become an acceptable- even romantic- way to answer a phone call. Skepticism would read as quiet, curious brilliance, and unwavering faith would translate to admirable passion. You’d never be able to look at the number 1013 without experiencing a jolt of wanting to believe, nor even look at a red Speedo without knowing the truth is out there. And Mulder and Scully would forever be revered as the absolute peak of friendship/partner/platonic workmate/relationship goals.

Now, thanks to Netflix, last year’s 10th season mini-series event, the blessed nerds of the Internet, and the inarguable immortality of Gillian Anderson, X-Files is still as relevant as ever. So in honor of its 23 years of spooky cultural relevance, let’s explore 23 of Mulder and Scully’s best moments.

(Warning: tons of spoilers ahead. It’s been 23 years. Get on it, already.)
