Maggie Smith is best known to many American audiences as Professor Minerva McGonagall (Harry Potter) or Violet Crawley (Downton Abbey). She is a Triple Crown actress and soul sister in Sass who is in need of protection in 2016. Maggie has acted in the theater, movies, and television for over 60 years.

At the tender young age of 17, Maggie started her acting career on the London stage and eventually took over Broadway. She earned two Tony nominations before winning in 1990 the Best Actress in a Play for Lettice and Lovage. Maggie turned her sights to the film world. It only took her nine years from her first movie role to secure her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for the film Othello. Maggie has since been nominated a total of six Academy Awards and has won two awards. She is only one of six people having won an Academy Award for best actress and supporting actress.

Many do not know Maggie started acting on television before movies. Most of her television appearances have been on British television but in 1974 she was briefly on the American Television show The Carol Burnett show. Like in stage and film, Maggie has dominated television awards. She has nine Emmy nominations and has won three times. Again, she is on a very short list of actresses that have won an Emmy for best actress and supporting actress.

While filming the Harry Potter series in 2007, she underwent treatment for with breast cancer. Maggie has since made a full recovery. At 81 years old, Maggie Smith is still very much in demand for her acting skills. We hope she continues to grace us with her incredible talent and 2016 leaves her the hell alone.
