32. Jeremy Irons

I can recall the exact moment I developed an unhealthy love for all things Jeremy Irons. My mother worked as a newspaper delivery person and I spent a fair amount of my evenings going along with her, sleeping in the backseat. Her love for audiobooks meant I tended to have different voices enter my subconscious while I slept and one of those audiobooks was Lolita, read by Jeremy Irons. Suffice it to say I woke up a very confused young girl and I’ve never been the same since. That’s a landmark awakening on par with the first time I saw Labyrinth. Jeremy Irons epouses class, even when the work is, shall we say less than exemplary?

Not every one of his films is a gem, but it’s hard to deny the classics I’ve added to my DVD shelf: Dead Ringers, the aforementioned Lolita, Die Hard With a Vengeance. Come on, I guarantee you have at least two Jeremy Irons movies in your house right now! To lose him, especially in light of David Bowie and, most particularly, Alan Rickman would be too much for me. We shape our lives by the crushes we have, and he was one of the ones who has lasted the longest.
